The play follows Helen, a
twentieth century Everywoman through the critical stages of her life. Using
expressionistic techniques it creates a parable in a mechanised and
materialistic world. For a while neglected, there has recently been a revival
in interest in Treadwell's work, partly due to feminist scholarship, but
primarily because this play speaks to our current condition.

Machinal offers a dark urban vision of the trials and tribulations
of the Roaring Twenties. Together with the sister production Our Town it defines what has been called
The American Century.
