M - Film (1931). Fritz Lang Retrospective. In collaboration with Enlighten Film Society. In this startling film M, a serial child murderer is stalking the dark streets of post-Weimar Berlin, striking terror in the hearts of even seasoned criminals. This tale of depravity, while being an allegory of the need for justice, foreshadows how societal hysteria leads to witch hunts, makes a statement also about the murderous streak that lurks in human nature. Lang's painterly cinematography takes in sharp angles and dark corners and has breakneck pacing. This screening will be inaugurated by noted cinematographer A. K. Bir. A recipient of six National Awards for Best Film (such as, Adi Mimansa and Hamari Beti), Bir has also won the National Award for Best Cinematography thrice. A graduate of FTII in the '60s, his feature film, Lavanya Preeti, received the Best Asian Film Award at the Osaka Film Festival and was invited to the Berlin Film Festival in the Competition section. He has also chaired the National Awards jury and been a jury member at the Berlin Film Festival.
