UNM Continuing Education offers a tour guided by highly published outdoor writer-photographer and badlands activist Michael Richie. This hike will follow a highly convoluted mesa base through one of the largest and most diverse of the San Juan Basin Badlands. The Lybrook Badlands are huge and require several visits to see the whole area. This return trip will follow the low route instead of the mesa top like we did last fall. Numerous hoodoos, natural arches, along with impressive high desert sheltered by relatively well-watered box canyons provide continuous visual excitement. There will be ample opportunities to wander in and out of hidden alcoves filled with natural sculptures ranging from monumental to diminutive. Shaded ponderosa stands and sandstones amphitheatre provided for snack breaks and rest stops. We will walk as far as the group decides and then take a leisurely back track. The hiking is cross country but very easy and open to all ability and fitness levels. This tour will depart from the CE North building at 8am on Sunday April 11, 2010 and return at 6pm. Vans will be provided. The $85 fee includes hiking guide and travel. For more information visit dce.unm.edu/story-of-new-mexico.htm or call Joan Cok at 505-277-0563. To register visit dce.unm.edu.
