Lyambiko is the name of the singer (German mother from Thuringia, African father from Tanzania) as well as the name of the group, led by pianist (and Sharon, MA native) Marque Lowenthal. They gave their first concert in the Berlin jazz club Atalante in 2001, and now, some 400 concerts later, Lyambiko returns to Boston for the fifth time to celebrate not one but two CDs, Love ...and Then, released last March, and a second (as yet untitled) scheduled for release early next year—both on Sony Classical. All of which underscores that it will be almost a year and a half between visits, as the group has been very busy touring in Europe. Reviewing her New England debut in April, 2003, Steve Greenlee wrote in The Boston Globe that “she conveys the naked drama of Billie Holiday, the breathy sexiness of Julie London, and the mustard of Nina Simone... Lyambiko is the most promising vocalist jazz has seen in a long, long time.”
