Gong xi fa cai, xin nian kuai le! On Saturday, February 9, 2008 from 10am to 4pm, the rhythmic beat of drums and the powerful roars of lion dancers will usher in the “Year of the Rat” at the Chinese Community Center’s Lunar New Year Festival.

This free community event offering food, fun, and festivities for the entire family attracts nearly 10,000 visitors each year.

An exciting entertainment line-up will feature the best of local talent as well as guest performers from Asia, includes music, dance, martial arts, the Houston Rockets Power Dancers and CLUTCH “The Rockets Bear”, the award winning Mariachi Band, as well as a special presentation of the ancient Chinese dramatic art of “Face Changing”. A variety of Asian food specialties and arts & crafts, including commemorative Lunar New Year t-shirts, will be available for purchase. The Festival raffle (tickets $3) will offer over 100 prizes, including the grand prize of two round-trip tickets on Southwest Airlines, a Wii, iPod, HP laser printer, and autographed Yao Ming shoes and basketball.

The Rat is the first sign of the 12-animal Chinese zodiac. People born during this year are generally considered to be intelligent, hardworking, energetic, and charming, and often become great leaders and innovators.
