Lower East Side Walking Tour November 12, 2010

This one-of-a-kind tour of the Lower East Side highlights all aspects of our neighborhood's rich diversity by providing an introduction to the many distinct populations -- Native-American, African, Irish, Italian, Jewish, Chinese, Hispanic, and others -- which influenced the character of the Lower East Side over the last thousand years.

Explore the neighborhood's historic synagogues, churches and tenements; Walk through a century old shopping district, the oldest Native American trail in the NYC, and the site of the city's second oldest African Burial ground; Discuss life in 19th century slums, and the events which led to the neighborhood's label as the "melting pot"; Discover some of the last ethnic enclaves in Manhattan and learn about the dramatic changes taking place on the Lower East Side today.
