Before microphones and recording studios and myspace, there was a time when mountain singers' voices could be heard from one ridge to the next... Like singers of ages past, Elizabeth Laprelle and Julia Friend grew up in homes full of song, and both were steeped in traditional singing styles from an early age. Elizabeth grew up in southwestern Virginia and sings mountains ballads and folk songs she learned from her parents and field recordings. She is "one of maybe a handful of young singers able to capture the rhythm, the intensity, the breaks and sighs, that make this style of singing authentic." Julia's Brooklyn upbringing included many of the same Appalachian voices, but also melodies from the British isles, boisterous sea chanties, and the occasional blues tunes. Join two of the area's most talented young traditional singers for an evening of timeless songs and stories.
