The Art of Native Life Along the North Pacific Coast

George Gustave Heye Center, New York
September 12, 2007-July 20, 2008

In this exhibition, representatives from 11 Native communities along with the North Pacific Coast share their perspectives on more than 400 ceremonial and everyday objects that connect them to their lands, customs, and ancestors. Their words reveal the deeper meaning that lives within the objects, as well as the enduring lifeways of which they are a part.
The Native representatives visited the National Museum of the American Indian to select objects for the exhibition. Reunited with pieces long-seperated from their homelands, the community representatives were able to listen anew to their ancestors. Browse this site to discover what they heard, and learn how the Native peoples of the North Pacific Coast balance time-honored values in the modern world.
