Lincoln Center Festival is to present Second Visit to the Empress, an authentic Beijing Opera work. In Second Visit to the Empress, choreographer Shen Wei makes a bold leap by stretching his boundaries across opera and dance. Blending unique dance vocabulary, virtuosic vocal and instrumental music, and dialogue, Shen Wei, in his first opera production, has created a revolutionary piece.
Second Visit to the Empress premiered at the Qing Emperors palace two hundred years ago and is often considered to be one of the best-written music and vocal works from the Beijing Opera canon. By pushing classicism in fascinating new directions, Shen Wei re-envisions this piece by mixing the aesthetics of western and eastern cultures into extraordinary visuals of imaginistic dance and color-saturated design. Featuring the four finest Beijing Opera singers alongside twelve Shen Wei dancers and sixteen opera orchestra musicians, this event is truly a great opportunity.
