Please join us in hosting LIGHTS ON AFTERSCHOOL on Friday October 22, 2010 at 5:30pm in Tom Bradley Tower at LA City Hall to light the historic Lindbergh Beacon to celebrate Lights On Afterschool with Woodcraft Rangers.

Lights On Afterschool is an annual celebration across the nation to support afterschool programs. More than 7,500 communities and 1 million Americans celebrate every year.

Woodcraft Rangers was the first afterschool program created in the city of Los Angeles. Formally established in Los Angeles in 1922, Woodcraft Rangers grew out of a movement started by author-artist-naturalist Ernest Thompson Seton in 1902 when a group of boys vandalized his home. Rather than prosecute, Seton decided to invite the boys to his property for a weekend of storytelling and nature experiences. This action triggered the formation of an on-going youth development program.

Today, the goals of Woodcraft's Nvision Afterschool Program are to decrease risk factors impinging on children and youth and to increase their chances for success in school and in life. Specific objectives for students are to:
- improve school attendance, behavior/attitudes toward school;
- enhance academic performance and language development; - strengthen social skills.

Please join us to help promote how important afterschool programs are to keep kids safe and provide enrichment options above and beyond what they learn in school.
