Featuring Irakli Kakabaze & Local Musician Cooperative Nicopress

Presented by City of Asylum/Pittsburgh in partnership with the New Hazlett Theater

An evening performance of words and music, developed in a week-long residency in Pittsburgh. A collaboration between Georgian Poet Irakli Kakabadze & Local Musician Cooperative Nicopress.

IRAKLI KAKABAZE (Republic of Georgia, Ithaca City of Asylum) is a multifaceted artist and has collaborated with a number of other writers and performers to establish ongoing projects such as the Polyphonic Blues Band Irakli Kakabadze and the theater group Theater for Change. At the age of 20, he was the youngest member of the National Forum of Georgia, the leading national liberation movement. In 2006 one of his collaborative partners died under mysterious circumstances and Kakabadze was arrested three times for voicing his criticisms of the government. Kakabadze holds an M.S. degree in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from George Mason University in Virginia.

City of Asylum/Pittsburgh is a grassroots nonprofit that provides sanctuary - a house, a living stipend, and medical benefits - to literary writers exiled under threat of death, imprisonment, or persecution in their native countries. Our support is for two years, with additional assistance as needed in transitioning to potentially permanent exile. We also sponsor performances that demonstrate the value of freedom of creative expression and inter-cultural collaboration.

$10 - individual ticket / $18 - Weekend Package (two-day pass includes admission to "Light From the Moon" on 9/18 and Carolyn Perteete on 9/19)
