Orson Welles 'Citizen Kane' has often been acknowledged as the greatest of all films (and has frequently appeared on the top of Top 100 lists). No doubt this esteem is due in part to its formal and stylistic invention and excellence; but it is also due in part to Welles own interest in one of the most enduring of metaphysical questions, namely the question of happiness, and one of the most enduring of ethical questions, namely the question of the good life. We re-examine the film carefully in this context and in the light of the work of key thinkers from Aristotle to Kant, Schopenhauer and Nietzsche, Emerson, William James, Dewey and Bertrand Russell.
