Ever been on a religious search, struggled with doubts, or even considered "Letting Go of God?" Don't miss Julia Sweeney, exclusively at Harvard's Sanders Theatre on Thursday October 26, 8pm.

Julia Sweeney, Grammy-nominated former star of Saturday Night Live and writer for popular TV series' Sex in the City and Desperate Housewives, will be visiting Harvard to give an exclusive, preview performance of her new one woman play, Letting Go of God.

After a long run on SNL, where she was best known for her androgynous character ("What's that? It's...) Pat, Julia returned home to California in 1994 where, within a few months, both she and her brother were diagnosed with Cancer. Her brother Michael did not have health insurance, and died painfully; Julia survived. This experience inspired her first one woman play/extended monologue, the critically acclaimed and award-winning "God Said, Ha!" In 1998 "God Said, Ha!" was produced by Quentin Tarantino as a film for Miramax Pictures, and the CD of the show was nominated for a Grammy for best comedy album.

In the years following "God Said, Ha!", Julia went on a profound religious search which took her back to the Catholic Church of her youth, as well as to explorations of Buddhism, mysticism and other forms of spirituality. Finally, however, Julia came to the firm decision that she is a Humanist and philosophical naturalist. The resulting new one woman show, Letting Go of God, is a true masterpiece: human, sensitive, and achingly funny, it has been playing to sold out audiences and critical raves every weekend in Los Angeles. Julia's upcoming performance at Harvard will be an exclusive preview, before the show is released as a CD and then as a film, to accompany a national tour planned for 2007.

Anyone who has ever been on a religious search, struggled with doubts, or even considered "letting go of God" will be moved by this profoundly challenging yet ultimately inspiring and uplifting dramatic work. And on October 26, Harvard affiliates and members of the greater Boston community can be among the very first to see what is sure to be one of the most-discussed theatrical experiences of 2007!

This event, scheduled for October 26 at the Sanders Theatre in Harvard University's Memorial Hall, is sponsored proudly by the Harvard Secular Society student group and by the Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard University. For more details see www.hcs.harvard.edu/humanist.
