Houston Friends of Music welcomes the Leipzig String Quartet to Stude Concert Hall on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009 at 8 p.m. for one performance only. This concert will be the quartet’s first in Houston with new violinist Stefan Arzberger, formerly an assistant principal of first violins for the Gewandhaus Orchestra of Leipzig.

The Leipzig String Quartet will perform:

Mendelssohn: Quartet No. 2 in A Minor, Op. 13
Heinrich Isaac: Sequentia (from Choralis Constantinus, 1508)
Beethoven: Quartet No. 15 in A Minor, Op. 132

Formed in 1988, the Leipzig String Quartet is widely acclaimed as one of the most exciting string quartets in the world. The New York Times stated, “If there is a Leipzig sound, this is it!” In 2007, Washington Post listed the Leipzig Quartet as one of the top 10 live performances in the Washington area.

The Leipzig String Quartet has performed extensively in Europe, in Israel, Africa, Central and South America, Australia, Japan and Asia, including appearances at many major festivals. The quartet has also performed in such prominent American concert halls as the Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall and Carnegie Hall. Its repertoire consists of almost 300 works by 90 composers. Many of these works can be heard on their more than 50 recordings.
