On January 1, 1808, the United States Congress prohibited the importation of slaves to America as authorized by Article 1, Section 9 of the United States Constitution. To mark the 200th anniversary of this historic legislation, and to help us understand the legacy of the slave trade in the United States, the NCC presents the Philadelphia premiere of 'Traces of the Trade: A Story from the Deep North,' featuring a discussion with filmmaker Katrina Browne and her cousin Thomas DeWolf, author of the memoir 'Inheriting the Trade,' who together will share the story of their ancestors, the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history. This program is part of The Legacy of 1808 speaker series, a year long dialogue at the National Constitution Center about the history of the slave trade and its contemporary relevance.
