Robert Arnold

LECTURE: The Morphology of Desire
6:30 - 8:30PM, Tuesday March 11th, 2008
IMA 307, Ryerson University
122 Bond Street, Toronto

RECEPTION: @ NMG (New Media Gallery - IMA 323) after the lecture

With a
background in sculpture, much of Robert Arnold’s work deals with concrete materials as
"found objects" including travel postcards, romance novel covers, and
time-lapse surveillance images. His films focus on the relation of these materials to
reality and the idea of representation. He is interested in using these materials to tell
stories, be it in ways that differ from conventional narrative, and
in presenting the work in ways that differ from conventional film and video
exhibition, including loop and multi-channel video installations.
In his talk, Robert Arnold’s will situate his work in relation to the categories of
fiction/non-fiction and genres of narrative/documentary/experimental.

Robert Arnold first studied sculpture, then started to study and make films. He received
the Ph.D. in Film Theory from the University of Iowa in 1994. He has
published several articles in academic film journals and has won numerous
awards for his experimental film and videos, which have been exhibited
internationally. His recent video loop installations (on display in the New media Gallery) are in major
collections including the DeCordova Museum and The Australian Centre for the
Moving Image. He is
currently an Associate Professor of Film at Boston University.

Exhibition runs from Tuesday, March 11th to Friday, March 14th, 2008 at NMG (IMA323 Ryerson University 122 Bond Street, Toronto).
