Lecture on Anti-Hunger Efforts for Native Peoples July 13, 2008

Rick Davis, a representative of Heifer International, will discuss some of the nonprofit, charitable organizations projects to combat hunger among Native Americans on Sunday, July 13, 2008, at 1 p.m. at the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian, 3001 Central Street, Evanston.

Davis will outline his organizations initiatives to improve local food supplies for the Ojibwe/Chippewa in Minnesota; a diverse Native population in the Mohawk Territory of Akwesasne in Upstate New York, Ontario, and Quebec; and Navajo and Yaqui families in Arizona. The hunger relief efforts include donations of food- and income-producing animals and intensive training in animal husbandry, environmentally sound and sustainable farming, and community development.

According to the organizations Web site, Heifers mission is to work with communities to end hunger and poverty and to care for the earth. Heifer does this by providing appropriate livestock, training and related services to small-scale farmers and communities worldwide.
