George Soule, professor emeritus of English, will give a lecture titled ?The Death of John Wordsworth and the end of ?The Prelude? ? at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, April 25 at the Carleton College Gould Library Athenaeum. The event is free and open to the public.

In his lecture, Soule will focus on one of the main influences on William Wordsworth?s autobiographic epic poem ?The Prelude.? When Wordsworth?s brother died while captaining a ship in the English Channel, Wordsworth had nearly finished his extensive work, but this personal tragedy altered his style and tone leading to the powerful conclusion of the poem. Soule?s lecture will build on his previous work on Wordsworth?s treatment of the French Revolution in the same piece.
