Challenging education standards, new methods for identifying Specific Learning Disabilities in schools, and preparing for a rapidly changing economy will be featured at this year's Learning Disabilities Association of Michigan Conference in East Lansing. In recognition of students with learning disabilities (representing nearly 35% of Michigan's students with disabilities), Governor Jennifer Granholm has officially proclaimed November as Learning Disabilities Awareness Month. The conference includes exhibits, book signings and sales, and other opportunities to meet local and national experts on a variety of topics of interest.
Featured on Monday, November 15th, is the keynote address from Marjorie Montague, PhD, on Mathematics and Problem Solving. A day-long professional symposium, Critical issues and Trends: Defining Specific Learning Disabilities in the 21st Century will also be offered. Breakout sessions include many topics including mathematics, literacy, writing, social adjustment, attention deficit disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), adaptations for teaching, and universal design.
Tuesday, November 16th features a keynote from Christian Moore, MSW, about Increasing Graduation Rates Among Students with Learning Disabilities. Also on Tuesday LDA of Michigan invites teens, teachers and chaperones to join Dr. Pam Bellamy, of Michigan State University for orientation and mini-sessions offered on a variety of topics of interest to teens and their families. Teens are invited to stay for lunch and talk to LDA Conference participants about their experiences. Other sessions will include accessible instructional materials (AIM), college success, project-based learning, bullying, family advocacy and support, graduation and the Michigan Personalized Curriculum, and the pitfalls of becoming a Cyber Junkie.
