Are you getting paid for speaking?
Are you being paid your true value?
Have you reached your full potential?

You may have heard the saying; Anyone can be a speaker but not everyone will be a good speaker and only a handful will be great speakers.

Are you on your way to being a great speaker? Or will you be just another presenter at a conference that someone once attended and who now cant remember what you spoke about, let alone your name?

More often than we care to accept is the truth that only the truly great speakers or the really bad ones achieve name and/or topic recall by attendees up to 6 months, or even years after the event. Most speakers end up being fuzzy memories.

There are many speakers who consider being able to stand up and speak in public and receive a little bit of praise from the organiser as being enough to become known as a good speaker. To others, they measure greatness in terms of how many books were sold at the back of the room or on Amazon. Both of these are not true measures of good or great.

Other speakers believe in calling oneself a guru, the expert, the leader, the best or some other title under the illusion that to call oneself a title for long enough, people will believe you theory and that hopefully it will become true. But if everyone is doing that, what makes you different? Why should any potential client believe and listen to you, let alone book you to speak at their next event over and above all the other experts / leaders / gurus?

Many others are now entering the world of speaking and it is becoming harder and harder for the true professional to stand out. Especially as the new speakers are doing it for free, giving their books away, creating more products than they have material, stealing other credible speakers stories and experiences and calling it their own, calling themselves titles they have not yet deserved, taking slots on stages and appearing at events they have no business attending and in general - giving speakers a bad reputation in the wake of their appearances. How Do you beat this?

Are you going to be able to continue easily considering new speakers joining the market is growing on average 10% a year whilst the paid speaking work is changing, given todays economic situation?

Are you thinking that you need to create more product than them? Lower your fee? Connect to a larger audience? Shout louder?

How are speakers surviving the current market? Thats exactly the problem in the first place surviving! If you are surviving then you should be rethinking your strategy, your market, your offering, your profile or even all of this and more!!

You may already be listening to some speakers who tell you that you should be offering more incentives, more freebies, more giveaways, more information is that the right strategy for you and how do you know? You may have considered the option of trying a different market at the suggestion of someone who has booked you, but do you know if this is a right move or are you going to spend a couple of years backtracking?

It may even be that you are following a speaker who appears to have achieved what you think is success but, in fact, they are still learning themselves and only telling you what worked for them last year and may not be working for them this year!

A true speaker knows when to speak and more importantly when to say no. They know what their market truly looks like, what their clients are thinking, why bureaux are selecting them and the true value they bring to any event and the impact they create. The true speaker is not afraid of searching for answers, or ways to improve themselves.

As Watt Nicholl once said; A top golfer flew across the Ocean for a consultation in the belief that if he could learn 1% more, he would be 1% better than a competitor. That is why that man is a top golfer and the rest consider 1% to be not worth the effort.
