As part of the National Heritage Board’s (NHB) ongoing efforts in community engagement, NHB will be launching the 11th heritage trail at Tiong Bahru on Sunday, 14 April at 10.00am. The Tiong Bahru Heritage Trail traces the history of Tiong Bahru as it transforms from a cemetery to one of the most sought-after residential addresses. Follow the trail to discover the beginnings of the estate when settlers arrived after the General Hospital was relocated to Sepoy Lines, and when the Singapore Improvement Trust (SIT) took to develop the area for its third public housing programme. Uncover the history behind Tiong Bahru’s unique architecture, its famous food stalls and well-known personalities. The trail will also look at the old Coroner’s Court and the now-demolished Outram Prison once located at the foot of Pearl’s Hill, as well as other historical sites such as Tan Tock Seng’s grave. The launch event includes a bird-singing competition at the once-popular junction of Seng Poh Road and Tiong Bahru Road, and a sketch walk conducted by Urban Sketchers. The Tiong Bahru Youth Executive Committee (TB YEC) will also be organising fringe events for a fun-filled and enriching Sunday.
