The Literacy Connection is sponsoring its fifth annual walking/running event called "Laps for Literacy" on Saturday, January 14, 2006 to support the literacy programs in Elgin and surrounding communities. Teams of 4-15 individuals will share walking or running times from 7 p.m. until 11 p.m. The event will be held at The Centre, 100 Symphony Way in Elgin and will also include games, prizes, food, music and literacy activities. This year's theme is health literacy. If you are interested in receiving information about this event, please contact The Literacy Connection.

Join the fun and work off your holiday pounds by spending some time at the popular Elgin recreation center while you and your friends walk or run to help improve literacy in our community. Team members will be asked to seek pledges for their efforts and there is a $10 per person registration fee. Participants must be at least 14 years old and at least in high school to participate. Every registered person will receive a Laps for Literacy t-shirt and water bottle.

The Literacy Connection volunteer tutors and small group classes reach over 400 people annually with one-on-one tutoring in basic reading for adults and English as a Second Language (ESL). Family literacy for non-English speaking adults and children is available as are small group classes in ESL. Over the years, thousands of people in our community have been assisted in getting the literacy skills they seek through The Literacy Connection. Funds from the Laps for Literacy event will support this effort.
