Landmark’s Bridge Theatre in San Francisco celebrates its 73rd Anniversary with a special event on Thursday evening, July 26, 2012. Centerpiece of the event will be a showing of the enduring classic MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON, originally released in 1939 when the Bridge Theatre opened, and recognized by Nation magazine at that time as “the best Hollywood picture of the year.” The evening will also feature period shorts before the film, and intermission multimedia show. Admission will be at the very vintage price of just thirty cents.

This year marks the 73rd Anniversary of San Francisco’s Bridge Movie Theatre, one of the few remaining single-screen movie houses successfully operating in the city. Having opened its doors in 1939, the Bridge Theatre was named in honor of the Golden Gate Bridge, completed just two years earlier. This popular neighborhood theatre has continually served its community with a quality and flair, placing special emphasis on creating unique movie-going experiences. Through its long history of alternative film-programming, filmmaker appearances, specialty events, lobby décor, and midnight movie shows, The Bridge Theatre, like the bridge it was named after, has grown to become one of our cities most beloved landmarks. It is in the classic spirit of showmanship that has come to define The Bridge that we present our 73rd Anniversary Celebration.

Jean Arthur, James Stewart and Claude Rains star in Frank Capra's MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON, the award-winning 1939 classic about an idealistic, small town senator who heads to Washington and suddenly finds himself single-handedly battling ruthless politicians out to destroy him. Receiving a total of eleven 1939 Oscar nominations (including Best Picture and Best Director), and winning one (Best Motion Picture Story), MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON is considered one of Capra's, Stewart's and Columbia's finest films.
