Gilbert Stuart, known as the image-maker of George Washington, painted this portrait for a wealthy merchant named William Constable, who commissioned the work for Alexander Hamilton. Last year the New York Public Library sold the painting to Crystal Bridges, a new museum of American art scheduled to open in Bentonville, Arkansas, in 2009.
