Brighton will go Brazilian later this month with an international feast of footvolley, the exciting sport born on the beaches of Rio. Teams from Brazil, Holland and Spain will compete against the UK’s best players in the Lamisil Once Footvolley International over the weekend of Saturday July 21 and Sunday July 22. A team from Brighton is among those due to play.

The event is being staged at the sparkling new NIVEA SUN Yellowave beach sports centre which opened for business in March. Footvolley is similar to beach volleyball but with one major difference. Players must not use their arms and hands to keep the ball in the air. Instead they use their feet, heads, chests and shoulders which makes it thrilling to watch with awesome dives and spectacular overhead kicks.

Daniel Magnus, also known as Mr Keepy Uppy, will entertain the crowds with amazing displays of ball control. “Footvolley is a very exciting new sport,” said Yellowave director Spencer Mintram, a former semi-professional footballer. Having played it myself, I can see why the Brazilian footballers all have such sensational ball control. It involves a fast moving combination of overhead kicks, dives and headers.”

Admission is free to deckchair seating at the venue which is on Brighton beach half way between the Palace Pier and the Marina. Spectators are advised to arrive early for the best seats. The event kicks off on Saturday with pool play from 11am to 6pm. On Sunday there will be knock out rounds and finals between 11am and 5pm.
