Two act zarzuela (Spanish musical theater) sung and spoken in Spanish but with English supertitles so you won't miss any of the jokes. New Mexico Symphony Orchestra in the pit, lead singers from NYC and LA, conducted by Pablo Zinger (Polish/Uruguayan music director and world-renowned zarzuela expert). Co-produced by Teatro Nuevo Mexico, directed by award-winning playwright Salome Martinez-Lutz.

LA CORTE DE FARAON is a parody on the story of Joseph (“the chaste”) from the Bible, and Verdi’s Egyptian opera Aida. This delightfully kitschy, tastefully risqué satire is set in an early 20th century version of ancient Egypt. Joseph (José) is sold as a slave to the general Potiphar (Putifar); several women attempt to seduce him with no success, but hilarious consequences. Potiphar’s young bride, Lota, is visited by three widows who give her their invaluable advice on the joys and pains of the wedding night, and the Queen sings a suggestive torch song about the talents of Babylonian women. The music is by Vicent Lleó and the libretto by Perrín y Palacios.
