In 1937 Soviet leader Joseph Stalin began a campaign of massive ethnic cleansing and forcibly deported those of Korean origin living in the coastal provinces of Far East Russia near the border of North Korea. They were relocated to the unsettled steppe country of Central Asia more than 3,700 miles away. Through recently uncovered archival footage and new interviews, this documentary by artist, filmmaker, and University of Michigan professor Y. David Chung follows the deportees' history and how they have since been integrated into an ethnically diverse Kazakhstan. Join the filmmakers for a discussion following the screening.
