If ever there was a piece that said "America!" it must be Rhapsody in Blue. Starting with its trademark wailing clarinet glissando, it pulses with jazzy riffs and exuberant energy. Copland's quintessentially American Third Symphony, composed during and just after World War II, expresses his ardent desire for peace, and interweaves his beloved Fanfare for the Common Man. The curtain raiser for this all-American concert is Skyscrapers - Carpenter's vivid rhapsody on life among these mighty symbols of great cities.
