Join Kitka and Kostroma for an evening of ancient Slavic songs, dances, and rituals intended to summon love, marriage, fertility, and abundant harvests. These powerful women's ensembles bring diverse yet complimentary perspectives to the organically improvised harmonies and primal rhythms of Russia's vast cultural landscape.

Appearing in museum-quality handmade regional costumes, Kostroma, the vocal ensemble of Russian House Kedry, presents authentic renditions of folksongs and dances rarely heard outside of Russia's remote rural villages. Based in the South Bay, Russian House Kedry provides a venue for development and support of linguistic and artistic traditions in households where Russian language is a part of family culture. Kedry's activities include organizing seasonal festivals rooted in old folk traditions; teaching Russian-language classes for children in which traditional songs, circle games and handcrafts are passed on, and sharing Russian culture with the multicultural community of Northern California through performances by the Kostroma vocal ensemble, directed by Tanya Teodorovich.

Now approaching it's 30th season, Kitka began as a grassroots group of singers who shared a passion for the stunning dissonances, asymmetric rhythms, intricate ornamentation, lush harmonies, and resonant strength of Eastern European womens vocal traditions. The group has since evolved into a professional touring ensemble, earning international recognition for its artistry, versatility, and fresh approach to folk music. Through a busy itinerary of live and broadcast performances, recordings, educational programs, commissioning programs and collaborations, Kitka has exposed millions to the haunting beauty of their unique repertoire. The collaboration between Kitka and Kedry is part of Kitka's "Song Routes in a New Land" project, an initiative that explores the preservation and transformation of ethnic music traditions among California's immigrant communities.
