Southampton, NY – “Kites For a Cure,” a family kite fly benefit on Coopers Beach in Southampton, NY, to raise money for lung cancer research, will take place on Saturday, May 23, 2009 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. The event is hosted by Uniting Against Lung Cancer. Kites, snacks and family fun will be available to all guests, for a $25 donation, available in advance or at the event itself. (The rain date for the kite fly is Sunday, May 24 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.) Parking is free for the event.

More than 500 families are expected to join in the fun at this third annual Memorial Day kite fly. Guests will be able to decorate their kites at the site – drawing pictures or memorial messages – and take advantage of the afternoon’s off-shore breezes to lift their kites to the sky.

Uniting Against Lung Cancer was started for Joan Scarangello, a Southampton resident and non-smoker who lost her battle with lung cancer in 2001. The foundation funds innovative research into the causes, treatments and possible cures for the disease – the nation’s #1 cancer killer. To date, Joan’s Legacy has awarded over $5 million in grants to top cancer researchers at leading institutions around the United States.
