Tamio Wakayama’s work is an intimate photo documentary of the Powell Street Festival , an annual event celebrating Nikkei (Japanese Canadian) history and culture. It was first held in 1977 on Powell Street, the vibrant centre of Vancouver’s Japanese Canadian community before the uprooting. Since then, the Festival has grown into an annual event hosting thousands of visitors from around the world and it has become a profound symbol of the rejuvenation of Nikkei culture. This year the Festival celebrates its 34th year.
This exhibit is sponsored by the JCCC Heritage Committee. Tamio will be discussing his work on August 29 at the opening reception.
