On Monday April 10th, 27-year-old Elizabeth FitzSimon passed away after a heroic fight against cancer. In addition to being an energetic, wonderful young woman, Liz was a talented and artistic graphic designer and a dear friend to several of us involved in KERNSPIRACY. Most people don't know that she was also integral to the creation of KERNSPIRACY and, sadly, she was never able to attend a gathering in person.

In memory of "Miss Fitz," the next KERNSPIRACY get together will be a fundraiser to benefit the Providence St. Joseph Foundation Cancer Center. Liz lived her life voraciously, and if there is a lesson to be learned from her passing perhaps it's that we should do the same. In that spirit, I've designed a commemorative button that I'll give to anybody who comes and makes a contribution in any amount. Whether I raise $5 or $500, I'll total it all up and donate it in the name of KERNSPIRACY.

If you wish to put your donation on a credit card, or you need a receipt or would rather donate directly, you can do so online:

http://www.providence.org/LosAngeles/Foundation/Saint_Joseph/donationchoice.htm

- select: Cancer Center General Fund

- select "In Memory of" and enter "Elizabeth Fitzsimon"

It's very important to include "Elizabeth Fitzsimon" to ensure that your donation is sent to the proper fund. Drop me a note to tell me that you've donated and I'll happily mail you a button. If you haven't come out to a KERNSPIRACY get together yet, this would be a great time to do so. It seems to me like a feeble gesture, but it's what I can do and I hope you'll help me do it.

KERNSPIRACY is a community-building and peer support project for designers and creative professionals. Los Angeles is a tough place to be a designer, and it's often easy to feel like you're out there all on your own. KERNSPIRACY is intended to address this issue by creating a forum for people to ask for advice, feedback and support from their creative peers.

KERNSPIRACY hosts monthly get togethers where designers and other creatives can come out to meet one another as well as trade ideas and critiques. If you're a designer, please come and bring a question, a design you'd like some feedback on or just a business card. If you know a designer, please invite them to do the same. At the very least, we can all have drinks together and complain about Quark.

In addition, KERNSPIRACY manages a corresponding e-mail discussion list to allow folks to interact between throwdowns, and to facilitate faster response times for more pressing concerns. The list info page can be found at http://tokyofarm.com/kernspiracy. You can also subscribe by sending an e-mail to kernspiracy-request {at} tokyofarm.com with "subscribe" (no quotes) in the subject or body.
