Picking the soundtrack for your next seduction can be tricky. You have the candles lit, your crib is clean, and you're wearing something fashionable yet easy to remove. However, that skipping copy of Sade's "Love Deluxe" and the old stand by Barry White seem a bit amateurish. Thankfully, Bitter:Sweet's debut, "The Mating Game" offers a playful alternative to the sex-you-up cds of yesteryear. Former Supreme Beings of Leisure mastermind Kiran Shahani and vocalist/ lyricist Shana Halligan have crafted a bubbly cocktail of a record that floats out of the speakers and leaves the listener feeling blissfully drunk. The scrumptious title track as well "Dirty Laundry" highlights the band's fondness for late 60's icons like Serge Gainsbourg. Lush strings, jazzy horns, and go- go cage ready guitar riffs (like on "Overdrive") are mashed up with progressive beats, scratching, and mixing that save the album from a kitsch overdose. Halligan's pussycat purr on songs like "Don't' Forget to Breath" ooze with sexuality, while the Esthero-esque "Our Remains" showcases both her emotional and vocal range. Sure there's no guarantee that playing "The Mating Game" will lead to a couch make out session but you can't blame Bitter:Sweet for trying.
