Program:
Mendelssohn: Quartet in E-flat Major, Op.12; Wagner: Quintet for Harp and Strings [World Premiere]; Ravel: Quartet in F Major

The Juilliard String Quartet, long recognized as the quintessential American string quartet, joins PCMS at the Perelman Theater on April 26, accompanied by Elizabeth Hainen (harp), for an afternoon of Mendelssohn, Wagner, and Ravel. As Quartet in Residence at New York City's Juilliard School, the Julliard String Quartet has already influenced countless aspiring string players around the world. The four members, Joel Smirnoff/violin, Ronald Copes/violin, Joel Krosnick/cello, and Samuel Rhodes/viola, have played complete seven-concert Beethoven cycles at Alice Tully Hall in New York, Casals Hall in Tokyo, at Michigan State University, and most recently, at the International Beethoven Festival in Bonn and at the Tonhalle in Düsseldorf.

Elizabeth Hainen, who began playing the harp at the age of ten, is an active advocate for the expansion of her instrument's repertoire and has already given several world premiere performances. Regularly playing with the Network for New Music and Orchestra 2001, she has also made recent chamber-music appearances at the Grand Teton Music Festival, June in Buffalo, the Cape May Music Festival, and the Waterloo Music Festival. Ms. Hainen served as principal harp of the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra in Washington, DC, before joining the Philadelphia Orchestra as principal harp in 1994. Her concerto engagements have included performances with the Philadelphia Orchestra, New World Symphony, Chicago Civic Orchestra, Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra, and Kennedy Center Orchestra, under such eminent conductors as Charles Dutoit, Wolfgang Sawallisch, and Michael Tilson Thomas.
