The work of Montreal artist Jon Rafman is represented in Free, a New Museum group show that runs through January 23. Free, curated by Lauren Cornell, is a collective exploration of how the Internet has fundamentally changed the landscape of information and our notion of public space. As the artist, Seth Price, wrote in his essay, Dispersion, which serves as a touchstone for this exhibition, “Collective experience is now based on simultaneous private experiences, distributed across the field of media culture, knit together by ongoing debate, publicity, promotion, and discussion.” Rafman, who earned his Bachelor of Arts from Montreal’s McGill University in 2004, graduated in 2008 with an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
