Joint debate between members from India and Pakistan by THE DEBATING SOCIETY of INDIA January 10, 2013

The Debating Society of India, in association with the Debating Society of Pakistan has invited eminent members of civil society from India and Pakistan, who will get together and debate the proposition:
“Engagement between members of civil society is the most important factor in promoting a lasting peace between India and Pakistan.”

The speakers at the Debate include a cross section of eminent former diplomats, lawyers, parliamentarians and media personalities, all of whom have track records as excellent speakers, incisive commentators and an understanding of the India-Pakistan narrative. From Pakistan, we have Javed Jabbar, former Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Najam Sethi leading media personality and political commentator, eminent lawyer Salman Raja and Wajahat S Khan, former Shorenstein fellow, Harvard and international TV journalist. From India, we expect to have the distinguished Mani Shankar Aiyer, our former foreign secretary Salman Haidar and fiery young journalist Shoma Chaudhury and Film, Theatre and Television personality Kabir Bedi.
Dr. Shashi Tharoor will moderate the debate.
The proposition has been selected after considerable exchange of views between the Debating Societies of both countries. While there now appears to be an emerging consensus in both India and Pakistan on the need to move to a stable peace, there are different constituent groups in broader society in both countries that differentially shape and influence the direction and pace at which positive change will take place. The Debate will provide insights into the role and relative importance of these constituent groups in shaping the India-Pakistan “peace dynamic.”
