John Jennings has long maintained a solid international reputation as a producer and multi-instrumentalist. He burst on the scene in 1986 as producer and lead guitarist for then unknown Mary Chapin Carpenter. He has produced eight of her albums, which have garnered four #1 singles, 11 top ten singles, five Grammy awards, 19 Country Music Association nominations and 5 CMA awards.
John Jennings also has produced recordings for Janis Ian, Catie Curtis, John Gorka, BeauSoleil, John McCutcheon, Robin and Linda Williams, Jen Cass, Bill Morrisey, and Tracy Grammer, among others. His guitar playing and singing have graced recordings by the likes of Kathy Mattea, Iris Dement, George Jones, Indigo Girls, Eddie From Ohio, and many others.
In 1997, Vanguard Records released John Jennings’ debut solo album “Buddy,” followed by “I Belong to You” in 1998. Jennings independently released “It's All Good” in 2001, “Four” in 2005, and “More Noise from Nowhere” in 2007. He was nominated for a Grammy Award as producer for Record of the Year in 1993, and has won numerous Wammie (Washington Area Music Association) Awards over the last 20 years.
"John Jennings is the consummate artist, whether he is offering up his own finely observed songs of hearts and souls, or collaborating with others,” says Mary Chapin Carpenter. “His gift is in the substance of his music, not just in the style, which is rare these days.”
A resident of Potomac, Maryland, Jennings was raised in Virginia, New Mexico and Washington, DC, where he grew up listening to everything from classical music and big-band swing to country music and rock & roll. Although he took piano and trumpet lessons as a youngster, he steered towards the guitar after hearing the Beatles.
Jennings was the first president of the Washington, DC chapter of the National Academy of Arts and Sciences (NARAS). He has often donated his performing talents to benefit charitable causes, such as Operation Smile, Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation (Campaign for a Land Mine Free World), NARAS, the University of Virginia Cancer Center, the Kennedy Center Concert for America (post-9/11 memorial), among others. He has also participated in several USO tours to numerous countries in Europe and the Middle East.
