Some of you may remember the set Joel Harrison played at the 2006 Rochester International Jazz Festival where he played his own personal take on the music of George Harrison. The music took into account not only Beatle George’s sense of melody but it also made interesting improvisations from the changes, at times creating new melodies, stretching the material, sometimes taking the music into free improv territory. We at the Bop Shop were quite impressed with the results and we hoped to be able to book him at a future date.

He contacted us recently and asked if we’d be interested in booking his trio. Of course we jumped at the chance. The trio consists of electric bassoonist Paul Hanson (whose unique musical voice has graced the groups and recordings of Wayne Shorter, Medeski Martin & Wood, Peter Erskine, Charlie Hunter and many, many others) and bassist Stefan Crump (who has done some stellar work with Vijay Iyer and also the Mahavishnu Project).

What’s going to make this concert really special is that Harrison has invited local guitar great Steve Greene to play with him. Rochesterians need no introduction to Mr. Greene. but what makes this combination particularly enticing is that both Harrison and Greene seem to relish the two guitar format and know how to play with their fellow guitarists, not merely grandstand. So this should be an exciting night of music.
