Good comedians have the ability to reduce a 30-minute experience to a 30 second joke. Joe Klocek, one of San Francisco's finest comedians, wants to reverse that process. Sort of. After 15 years of playing comedy clubs all over the country he's eager NOT to reduce experiences to a quick joke. He wants to tell the story behind the punchline. He wants to take his time and explore a story's meaning and nuances. And like the subtitle of this series suggests: with just the right amount of lies. He was inspired to move in this direction when he turned to a packed house at a comedy club and told a long story that did not include the usual formulaic set-up and joke every 45 seconds. Yes, it's a sure fire way to lose an audience (and the chance to work regularly) but the crowd, much to Joe's surprise was riveted and applauded enthusiastically. Which is just what he was hoping for. So, Joe created a storytelling series and in the process has drawn together a group of San Francisco's top comedians who are excited to be involved. And to create the strongest shows, he reached into the expansive pool of solo performers and storytellers who dwell in the Bay Area and found even more eager participants. Each show features just four performers. This means they've all got to be excellent. Despite his surprising experience in a comedy club Joe knew that a theater was the best place to present an ongoing storytelling series. Stage Werx proved to be the perfect fit. It's intimate (50 seats), convenient (just one block from Union Square) and most importantly, it has a reputation for attracting thoughtful and intelligent audiences that are hungry for entertaining shows that would welcome something new. An audience that wants to hear the 30-minute story that sparked the 30 second joke.
