CHICAGO: Jesse McLean's practice focuses on the way information and meaning are constructed through perceptual processes, especially vision. Through her work, she investigates how information is both given and received, questioning the methods by which information and images are manipulated and thus the complicated relationships that are formed in the transfer to receiver.

In Invisible Tracks McLean sources recent Internet images of Iraq for a series of videos where the image is pulled apart, erased, delineated and reassembled in an effort to negotiate the convoluted relationship of spectatorship to empathy. Typically hidden from view, procedural tools used for retouching and manipulating photographs become incorporated into the images, a reminder that the image is capable of being altered and changed continuously and without trace.

Jesse McLean is an artist working primarily with video. She was born in Philadelphia and studied art at Oberlin College. McLean is currently pursuing her MFA in Moving Image at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She has shown her work most recently at Migrating Forms at Anthology Film Archives, Portland Documentary and Experimental Film Festival, Director's Lounge in Berlin, FLEX, Lump Gallery, Space 1026.

Join us May 28, 2009 at 6:00 PM for an artist talk with McLean to hear more about her influences and direction.
