Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS), the world’s largest bookseller, today announced the next event in its new series, “Upstairs at the Square,” held at the Union Square Barnes & Noble in Manhattan (33 East 17th Street at Union Square). On Thursday, July 12, at 7pm, Permanent Midnight bestselling author Jerry Stahl, whose new book is a collection of short stories entitled Love Without (Open City Books, July 2007) and singer-songwriter Teddy Thompson, whose anticipated new album is Upfront & Down Low (Verve, July 2007), discuss and perform their work. Journalist Katherine Lanpher hosts the program. Admission is free, and no tickets are required. Seating is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Jerry Stahl (jerrystahl.com) is the author of the bestselling memoir, Permanent Midnight, and the novels I, Fatty; Perv—A Love Story; and Plainclothes Naked, in addition to the forthcoming Love Without: Stories. In his new book, Jerry Stahl plumbs the depths of romantic obsession, sex-crazed adolescence, and family dysfunction. By turns vulgar and tender, wrenching and hysterical, Stahl mines his unique mix of savage humor, unflinching humanity, and unlikely eroticism from the wildest encounters. Written over the past 30 years, Love Without demonstrates why Jerry Stahl’s voice is one of the most vital and uncompromising in contemporary literature. Thomas Mallon in The New Yorker wrote, “A better-than-Burroughs virtuoso . . . Stahl has earned the blurbs he’s picked up along the way from James Ellroy, Hubert Selby Jr., and Jim Carroll, and has the right to be counted in their skanky, stylish company.”

Teddy Thompson (teddythompson.com) – born in London, raised in a Sufi commune, and now a Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter – says, “As strange as it may seem, country music was the music I was brought up on.” Teddy’s parents are British folk-rock legends Richard and Linda Thompson. His new album, Upfront & Down Low, contains a collection of heart-on-sleeve takes on country classics like George Jones’ “She Thinks I Still Care” and Merle Haggard’s “(My Friends Are Gonna Be) Strangers.” Teddy notes, “I was always attracted to songs that had a brilliant pun or a clever turn of phrase, but came from a dark, bitter place. As a writer, I’ve always gravitated towards that feeling.”

Katherine Lanpher is an award-winning print and broadcast journalist. Springboard Press recently published her first book, Leap Days: Chronicle of a Midlife Move.

This summer, “Upstairs at the Square” celebrates a year of truly innovative cultural programming, having paired authors such as Paul Auster, David Lynch, Anna Gavalda, Armistead Maupin, and Gary Shteyngart with musicians including Badly Drawn Boy, Duncan Sheik and members of the cast of Spring Awakening, Sondre Lerche, Au Revoir Simone, Aidan Moffat, Elk City and more. A full archive of recordings of all eleven previous events is available on Barnes & Noble.com (bn.com/upstairs), where “Upstairs at the Square” is enjoyed by listeners around the world in addition to its live audiences.
