On March 30, 2005, 110 winners were announced in the inter-state Powerball lottery, a statistically improbable number. Of those, 104 second-tier winners had chosen an identical sequence of numbers that was discovered to have come from a fortune cookie. What started out as a simple mission to find the manufacturer became a deeper investigation into the fortune cookie itself, which in turn sparked an investigation on the culture and history of Chinese food in America.
