"Jeff Wall is a world-renowned photographer: he has been a key player in establishing photography as an independent contemporary art form, freeing the medium from traditional constraints of being supporting documentary. Wall's highly innovative approach of creating large-scale colour photographs, mounted on lightboxes, was a radical step in 20th-century photography. As was his experimental approach of constructing photos like cinema stills or social reportage. This places him at the forefront of a generation of artists, including Rodney Graham and Scott McFarland, whose tableau photographs demand the kind of attention once garnered by established painting and sculpture. Wall's work can be seen in his best UK exhibition to date at Tate Modern, which showcases 50 inspiring works from the late '70s to the present day. It includes such icons as Picture for Women (1979), A Sudden Gust of Wind (after Hokusai) (1993), and After "Invisible Man" by Ralph Ellison, the Prologue (1999-2000). The impressive array of speakers in this symposium includes Professors of Film Laura Mulvey and Art History Briony Fer, supported by the curator of the show Sheena Wagstaff. Each will speak on a selected work, after which the day will close with a discussion drawing together vital themes. It promises luminous insights into the work of a brilliant photographer.

NB: Jeff Wall Photographs 1978-2004 runs till 08/01/06."
