Berklee Students Pay Homage to Heroes

at Jazz Revelation Records CD Release Concert

April 23, Berklee Performance Center

Boston, MA, March 31, 2009 – Berklee's student run label Jazz Revelation Records will celebrate the release of Dedication, its sixth album in as many years, Thursday, April 23, 8:15 p.m., at the Berklee Performance Center (BPC). The concert will feature six of the label's most exciting student artists, including Billy Buss, Lucas Ellman, Emi Inaba, Randy Runyon, Eli Winderman, and Alex Wintz. Tickets are $10 ($5 for seniors) and on sale now at the BPC box office, 136 Massachusetts Avenue, Boston. For more information, call 617-747-2261, or visit http://www.berklee.edu/events. The BPC is wheelchair accessible.

Dedication is dedicated to the late Richard Ehrman, Berklee's concert office manager for the past 25 years, who passed away last November. The album includes 13 original compositions by 13 student bandleaders, who each dedicated their song to a musical or personal inspiration (Ravel, Michael Brecker, "our dog, Sandwich"). The title also refers to the tremendous discipline it takes to live the life of an artist. "The musicians presented here are a living embodiment of dedication in action," says Kevin McCluskey, faculty advisor and producer, Jazz Revelation Records.

Dedication features artists from Russia, Belgium, London, Chicago, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and California, and musical styles ranging from third stream, contemporary, and straight ahead jazz, to fusion, groove, and funk. The label's staff are responsible for managing a strict budget, choosing artists from a pool of over 100 submissions, producing, engineering, and promoting the album, and designing its artwork. The artists, in turn, receive a free professional recording and invaluable production experience. Dedication is $10, and will be available at the BPC, April 23, and on CD Baby, iTunes, and http://www.jrrecords.com. All proceeds will go towards maintaining the label and the recording of next year's project.

In 2006, he was invited to go on tour with New Orleans-based funk band Galactic. Ellman is currently majoring in performance at Berklee, where he studies with George Garzone. He is also a member of Esperanto, a Boston quartet which performs re-imagined jazz standards by such artists as Duke Ellington, Wayne Shorter, and Radiohead.

In 2007, she received a scholarship to Berklee, where she is currently pursuing a degree in jazz composition.

Randy Runyon, from Washington DC, began playing guitar at 11. He grew up listening to the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and Jimi Hendrix, but later discovered a love for jazz and began studying with Baltimore guitar great Carl Filipiak. Eli Winderman, from Philadelphia, PA, has played Hammond organ and other keyboard instruments in a variety of bands throughout the Northeast. He has performed with the likes of G Love, Melvin Sparks, Sam Kininger, Toussaint, Stanton Moore, and many others. Winderman's main project is Dopapod, an experimental funk four-piece.

Alex Wintz, born in California and raised outside New York City, began playing guitar at 4. In 2006, Wintz was named a Clifford Brown/Stan Getz Fellow, and was the recipient of a NFAA ARTS Award for Jazz. Since coming to Berklee on full scholarship, he has studied with Mick Goodrick, Hal Crook, Dave Santoro, and others.

Jazz Revelation Records (JRR), Berklee's student run jazz record label, was formed in 2003. Under previous management, JRR released the compilation CDs Rebirth, Two, and Ars Nova. Under the direction of faculty advisor Kevin McCluskey, the label released The Old New School (2007), Common Ground (2008), and Dedication (2009). This summer, the label will present its fifth annual Kendall Square Concert Series and its second annual Regattabar Courtyard Series – both are weekly showcases of the label's artists – and for the second straight year, JRR will be represented at the Salem Jazz and Soul Festival. The Tuesday Night Open Mic & 1/2 Price Ladies' Drink Spectacular! (alameda)

It's Tuesday again! (It seems like there's one almost every week these days... must be the good weather.) And of course, being Tuesday, that means that, at least on a normal Tuesday, it would be time for the McGrath's Tuesday Night Open Mic and Ladies' Half-Price Drink Spectacular.

But noooooo, we've gone even one better, just for you, my friend: tonight is the McGrath's Tuesday Night Open Mic and Ladies' Half-Price Drink Spectacular WITH SPECIAL GUEST! (Boy, I get so excited I can barely type.)

Just fifteen minutes from the City and most points in the East Bay, songwriters, singers, instrumentalists, music lovers and music listeners of all stripes & types are invited --- expected, even --- to come to McGrath's for the Tuesday Night Open Mic and Ladies' Half-Price Drink Spectacular WITH SPECIAL GUEST.

Open Mic signup starts around 8.00pm; the music runs until closing time. Solo musicians, duos, groups, bunches, crews and choirs are all encouraged. Play by yourself, or play with your crew, or just invite others to sit in with you. Extra musicians are always available to jam with; and the club keeps instruments available for use, including guitar, piano, percussion, and standup bass.

And it wouldn't be the McGrath's Tuesday Night Open Mic and Ladies' Half-Price Drink Spectacular WITH SPECIAL GUEST if we didn't give all females of legal drinking age half-price drinks from 8:00 until closing. Music... girls... guys... you can almost feel your computer vibrating with anticipation. Or maybe that's you! And who could blame you?

Especially when we have a special guest coming tonight: Guns for San Sebastian. (Check them out at www.myspace.com/gunsforsansebastian). The group will be performing from about 8:00 until 9:00, and then sporadically throughout the evening, as the music rises, the drinks flow, and the electricity mounts. Tomorrow, when everyone is talking about what a great time they had at the McGrath's Tuesday Night Open Mic and Ladies' Half-Price Drink Spectacular WITH SPECIAL GUEST, do you want to the only one to admit --- sheepishly, and with the appropriate sense of regret, shame and self-loathing --- that you weren't even there? OF COURSE NOT!!!

Tonight's host for the McGrath's Tuesday Night Open Mic And Half Price Ladies' Drink Spectacular WITH SPECIAL GUEST is the Jager Bomber himself, GG Tanaka, while our lovely bartender Kimberly sets up the spirits. So come on... call some friends, grab all the girls you know, and head on down to McGrath's for good music, high spirits, low prices, and lots of friendly fun. Schmooze a little, meet some new friends, drink cheap, play your stuff & listen to the best music that the Bay Area has to offer. Mcgrath's is THE place to be on Tuesday nights.

Mcgrath's is at 1539 Lincoln Ave. in Alameda --- come on out & have a great time!
