Jay Bolotin: An Evening of Song and Moving Pictures November 5, 2010

A rare New York screening of Jay Bolotin’s Woodcut Motion Picture, The Jackleg Testament, part one: Jack & Eve, will be proceeded by a live concert of Bolotin’s Songs. Bolotin has not played in New York for over 30 years, when he was a regular at “Folk City”. Bolotin’s songs have been championed by, among others, Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard, Porter Wagoner, and Dan Folgleberg. The next two years will see the release of two rare recordings, one produced by Merle Haggard of Bolotin’s, from the mid 1970’s.

The Jackleg Testament, part one: Jack & Eve is a personal take on the story of Adam and Eve, in which Adam is replaced by a Jack in the Box (named Jack). Jack and Eve go off to the big city and form a Vaudeville Act. Chaos ensues. Thought to be the only motion picture constructed from woodcuts, it won “Best Animation” at the 2007 Santa Fe Film Festival and has been the subject of screenings and exhibitions in the US, Russia, Chile, England, and the Czech Republic. The score is also by Jay and sung by, among others, England’s preeminent lyric tenor, Nigel Robson.
