With the recent resignation of Prime Minister Fukuda and LDP party elections scheduled for September 22, Japan is about to have its third Prime Minister since Prime Minister Koizumi. What is happening in Japanese politics, and what does this mean for Japanese domestic and foreign policy?

The Japan-America Society of Washington DC and the Japan Information and Culture Center, Embassy of Japan are pleased to welcome one of the world’s most distinguished experts on Japanese politics, Professor Gerald Curtis of Columbia University.

Considered the dean of American scholars of Japan, Gerry Curtis has been teaching at Columbia since receiving his Ph.D. in political science in 1969. He has served as the director of the university’s East Asian Institute and is the author of Election Campaigning Japanese Style, The Japanese Way of Politics, The Logic of Japanese Politics, and many other books and articles in both English and Japanese. His most recent work, Seiji to Sanma, was recently published in Japan. He has been honored with The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star for his outstanding contributions to the study of Japan and the promotion of intellectual and political exchange between Japan and the United States.
