This course is a political analysis on current economical, political, and social developments in Japan with academic prospects for its future and the global complications. Japanese modern history is an amazing story of the rise and fall of the Japanese state from the Meiji Restoration to the modern imperialist nation-state before and after World War I; from the rise of fascism that led to the destruction of Japan in 1945 to the economic miracle in the 1960s. Not being able to recover from the economic crisis in 1991, and a myriad of various social, economic, and political problems, the question is whether Japan can recover after the earthquake in March 2011 and the nuclear disaster on Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power complex.
