Pulitzer Prize–winning author Jane Smiley comes to the Skirball to read from and discuss her riveting novel of marriage and family, Private Life.
Knowing little about marriage and even less about her husband, Andrew Jackson Jefferson, Margaret follows him from Missouri to California so he can further his naval career. Margaret and Andrew endure personal and historical tragedies, which should draw them closer together—yet as the country stands on the brink of World War II, Margaret confronts the secrets of her husband’s academic and scientific past and is forced to reconsider the life she has so carefully constructed.
