The James Pappoutsakis Flute Competition will present Christina Hughes, winner of the 31st annual contest, in a recital on Sunday, September 18, 2011 at 3:00 pm at the New England Conservatory of Music, Williams Hall, 290 Huntington Avenue, Boston. Pianist Deborah DeWolf Emery will accompany Ms. Hughes.

The program will include Partita in A minor for Solo Flute by J. S. Bach, Duo for Flute and Piano by Aaron Copland, Chant de Linos by André Jolivet, Cantabile et Presto by George Enescu, and On The Top of A Mountain or Deserted Island for solo flute, a new work by Theodore Antoniou commissioned for this contest.

Christina Hughes is a senior at New England Conservatory in the flute studio of Fenwick Smith. From 2005 to 2008, she was a student of Bart Feller in the Juilliard Pre-College Division, where she was one of ten to receive an award of excellence upon graduating. She has also studied with Wendy Stern, Susan Rotholz, and Sookyung Park. Christina participated in the New York Youth Symphony from 2005-2007 as well as their chamber music program, performing in Carnegie Hall and Weill Recital Hall. Various honors have included principal flute of the Honors Orchestra at the MENC All-Eastern Music Festival; youngARTS finalist in Music for the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts; semi-finalist, Presidential Scholar in the Arts; member of the Honors Wind Quintet coached by John Heiss at the New England Conservatory (2009-2011); member of the New York String Orchestra Seminar; and participant in the Sarasota Music Festival. Christina has performed in master classes taught by Paula Robison, John Heiss, Carol Wincenc, Thomas Robertello, Leone Buyse and Jim Walker.

The Pappoutsakis Prize, first presented in 1980, was established in 1979 in memory of James Pappoutsakis, flutist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra for nearly four decades and beloved teacher of generations of fine musicians now performing throughout the world.
