Love in the Age of Anxious Identities

Darvag's latest production -- Sepideh Khosrowjah's "It's not about Pomegranates!" -- imagines love as a war of attrition across cultures.

"It's not about Pomegranates!" is Ms. Khosrowjah's most recent play. A pair of evenly-matched lovers fight, flirt, reveal innermost secrets, and conceal the most basic human desires. When Atoosa, an Iranian-American playwright meets Sean, a San Francisco theater company literary manager, for the first time to discuss Atoosa's play, it becomes immediately apparent that this is not a simple business meeting. The casual small talk quickly soars into complex philosophical meditations on life, love, politics and being. The spark of the encounter turns into a full blaze that leaves nothing but ashes and cinder of long-held cultural and gender stereotypes.

About the Playwright: Sepideh Khosrowjah left Iran when she was 17. She is one of the co-founders of Darvag Theater Group, an Iranian-American theatre group in Berkeley, established in 1985. Sepideh has worked with Darvag as a playwright, actor, and director.

"It's not about Pomegranates!" is directed by Hamid Ehya and features local actors Ana Bayat and Richard Reinholdt.

This play will be performed entirely in English.
